After a God’s Not Dead 2 billboard facing the Republican National Convention center was blocked for being “too political” and offensive for mentioning faith – another outdoor advertising company has said they’ll post it … for free!
“I saw the story somewhere online talking about how the billboard was rejected,” said Ike Wingate, founder of Wingate Media Group, “because of the messaging.
“When I saw that, I thought ‘That’s too bad,’” said the media executive. “I thought ‘Wow, it’s a shame they are not able to promote that from the standpoint of the film’ — but then, from a secondary standpoint, the right to free speech was in some senses denied. I didn’t like that.”
So, he offered to place the billboard – promoting the popular movie’s upcoming DVD release in August.
What was so offensive about the big outdoor ad – called too “incendiary” to be put up — so offensive that Cleveland advertising officials refused to drape it, as planned, over a building facing the convention center?
It featured God’s Not Dead 2 actress Melissa Joan Hart declaring, “I’d rather stand with God and be judged by the world than to stand with the world and be judged by God.”
Somehow that was just too shocking for Republican delegates to see. Oddly enough, advertisers allowed a billboard about the same size mocking Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. Another billboard reminded convention-goers that atheists also vote.
The double standard was just too much for Wingate, who posted on his Facebook page “It’s a shame that this billboard company said ‘No’ to free speech and this message.”
He said his company would have no problem with such a message.
Then, Wingate says after posting the Facebook message, “I just thought ‘Let’s donate the space on a digital billboard.’ With the digital platform we have, we thought it made a lot of sense.”
Pure Flix, which is promoting the movie, is thankful for the support, said Chief Operating Officer Steve Fedyski. “We are grateful to Wingate for their wonderful gesture of solidarity, which demonstrates the importance of standing together as people of faith to protect the foundational freedom of religion afforded to all Americans.”
“God’s Not Dead 2,” the sequel to the blockbuster “God’s Not Dead,” tells the story of a public school teacher whose faith and career come under attack when she answers a question in class about Jesus.
God’s Not Dead 2 comes to Blu-ray™ combo pack and DVD on August 16, 2016.
